Why We Should Embrace Change

Why Change?

Whether you make new year's resolutions or you reject them, this is a time of year when such things cross our minds. We reflect on the past. We look toward the future. This looks different on everyone, but “change” is at the root of the resolution practice. Why should we change?

Personal habits play a crucial role in enabling individuals to adapt to their surroundings. Despite the challenges, embracing change is essential for personal and professional growth. By striving for improvement in every aspect of life, individuals can see positive results and thrive. Small changes in daily routines, such as prioritizing tasks and planning ahead, can significantly increase productivity. By embracing these changes, you can focus on important tasks, eliminate distractions, and improve your skills. Embracing these changes can lead to new opportunities for personal growth. (1)

The Healthy Minds Monthly New Year's Resolutions Polls have shown over the past 3 years that 76% of Americans make mental health a focus in their new years resolution practice. Typically this practice has revolved around physical fitness, employment, relationships, and travel. While these are all very important, it is valuable to prioritize the maintenance of mental health the way one does with physical health and financial security. (2)

One interesting new trend in resolution making that focuses on mental wellness is “forest bathing.” Forest bathing is a practice of immersing oneself in nature, adopted from Japan. Research shows that forest bathing benefits physical and mental health, including reducing anxiety, strengthening the immune system, and improving sleep. The basic principles of forest bathing can be applied anywhere, even from home, and includes finding a quiet place, ditching your devices, going slowly (this is not exercise), and noticing what you see, touch, smell, and hear all around you. Here are some other ways to empower change

  • acknowledge how hard change can be and treat yourself with kindness

  • create a trend of wellness through small steps towards achievable goals

  • commit to you, and find helping coping tools and invest in new hobbies

  • find your people, the ones who can guide and support you

  • consider avoiding substances of any kind, or anything else that will sabotage your efforts for change

  • learn the stuff you need to, from reliable sources

  • practice gratitude

  • celebrate progress not perfection (4)

Resolutions may not be your thing, but we all benefit from growth and strengthening our well being. Hopefully some of these ideas inspire your efforts for improvement, whenever you decide to do so.
