4 Common Teletherapy Questions
What is actually happening right now? All of the changes brought about by the COVID-19 virus can be extremely disorienting. We are all trying to find new norms and rhythms in life. If you’re like me, you’re not so fond of change- even though we know that change can help us grow. I invite you to join me in leaning into the discomfort.
During this time, we need to be even more mindful of how we can take care of our mental health, which directly affects our physical health. Mental health services all over the world are being transitioned to telehealth services, which includes using phone or video services.
Here are some questions we have heard as clients consider making the transition to teletherapy:
Should I try teletherapy?
Absolutely yes. Right now is a critical time to continue using, or start using, mental health services that are available to you. We all need to take care of ourselves and manage our anxieties, fears, stress, etc. so that we can be better for our loved ones.
Is it confidential?
Yes, but it is also partly up to you to ensure so. Be sure to create a space, like the one in the office, where you and your therapist are not heard or seen. Maybe that means using a sound machine, maybe that means taking a drive down the street and sitting in your car. Also, you can be very clear and firm with others around you that you are not to be disturbed during the session. Arranging childcare is still a necessity, whatever that looks like for you. On our part, your therapist should offer you a HIPAA compliant platform that is confidential and safe. At Roubicek & Thacker Counseling, we are using Zoom. Check it out for yourself.
What about technical difficulties?
Yes, technology is great, and also super frustrating when it doesn’t work. Be mindful that right now everyone is online, so the bandwidth to your internet might be spotty. Make sure you have a good internet connection before starting your meeting. If you are in need of better internet, some companies are offering special deals during this time. What equipment do I need?
Your therapist will provide suggestions based on the platform you will be using. But, make sure you have the necessary equipment before your session begins, whether it be a set of headphones or a webcam and built-in mic, to create clearer audio and video on your computer. Also make sure your device is charged and ready to go when your session begins.
What an odd time we are in right now. We need to lean on each other (virtually, of course) for support and encouragement. Make sure you are taking care of yourself, so that you can be a support for your loved ones during this unprecedented time. Blessings to you and your families.
